Hello Everyone

Look at these pictures! These plants have only been here since late July! Seven weeks growth from tiny seedlings!

They have gone to flowers very quickly because the ground is still cool from winter but the midday & early afternoon temperatures have gone up such a lot lately that the plants don’t like cool soil & hot sun, feel stressed & so flower to make seeds to preserve their destiny!!

In the autumn  the plants are much happier as the soil is still warm from summer and there is less difference from the cooling day air temperatures so they will keep producing leaves and you can pick and come again up to three times usually.

Josh and Steve picking this morning. Josh getting milk thistle for the Horta & Steve some kale. The vetch, a legume – pea plant family – is in great abundance this time of the year and is fabulous for fixing the nitrogen into the soil. It seems to clamber over everything like a lacy veil!

We have plenty of snow peas from Bill at Beulah & Jean at Tuckaflora for you to buy on Saturday morning at Taylor Square & Carriage Works (formally Eveleigh) Markets on Saturday. Our own snow peas are growing well, and probably ready to crop in a month. You can see ours just coming in to flower, Bill’s ready to pick.

At the markets in citrus there’s pink grapefruit, navels, clementines, Emperor mandarins and Semiola tangelos.
